An introgressed gene causes meiotic drive inNeurospora sitophila

چکیده

Significance In order to survive, most organisms must deal with parasites. Such parasites can be other or, sometimes, selfish genes found within the host genome itself. While much is known about parasitic organisms, interaction their hosts, and ability spread between species, less genes. We here identify a “spore killer” gene in fungus Neurospora sitophila . The appears have evolved genus but has entered species through hybridization introgression. also show that counteract RNA interference. These results shed light on diversity of terms origin, evolution, interactions.

The hitchhiking effect of an autosomal meiotic drive gene.

Transmission-ratio distortion is a departure from a 1:1 segregation of alleles in the gametes of a heterozygous individual. The so-called driving allele is strongly selected regardless of its effect on the fitness of the carrying individual. It may then have an important impact on neutral polymorphism due to the genetic hitchhiking effect. We study this hitchhiking effect in the case of true me...

Sex-specific meiotic drive and selection at an imprinted locus.

We present a one-locus model that breaks two symmetries of Mendelian genetics. Whereas symmetry of transmission is breached by allowing sex-specific segregation distortion, symmetry of expression is breached by allowing genomic imprinting. Simple conditions for the existence of at least one polymorphic stable equilibrium are provided. In general, population mean fitness is not maximized at poly...

Meiotic drive and sex chromosome cycling.

Sex-linked meiotic drive is found in a broad variety of taxa, including insects, birds, and mammals. In populations of some species, we see four types of sex chromosomes segregating: normal and driving X chromosomes and susceptible and resistant Y chromosomes. A theoretical analysis shows that a stable four-chromosome equilibria is a more common outcome in these systems than previously recogniz...

Meiotic drive and evolution of female choice.

As a special version of the good-genes hypothesis, it was recently proposed that females could benefit from choosing drive-resistant males in a meiotic drive system. Here, we examine with a three-locus, six-allele population genetic model whether female choice for drive resistance can evolve. An allele leading to female preference for drive-resistant males was introduced at low frequency into a...
